California, honestly
Most of what you have read about legal tint here is wrong.
Shops across Orange County will tell you the windshield allows a four-inch strip and that front windows need 70% light transmission. Neither is what the vehicle code says.
The bottom edge of the material is at least 29 inches above the undepressed driver’s seat when measured from a point five inches in front of the bottom of the backrest with the driver’s seat in its rearmost and lowermost position.
And for front side windows, the film itself must transmit at least 88% of visible light — with film and glass together still clearing the federal 70% standard. Two thresholds, not one. That rules out most of what gets sold as legal tint in this county.
It does not rule out heat rejection. It means only one class of film can do it legally, and we will tell you which before you book rather than after you get a ticket.
